Webinar Overview

On Wednesday, January 25, 2023, Microsoft suffered a large outage to multiple Microsoft cloud-hosted services due to a withdrawal of multiple BGP routes and a significant number of route changes which resulted in a high amount of packet loss. Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Sharepoint, and other services were unavailable globally for almost 90 minutes, affecting millions of consumers and enterprises reliant on these services. Additional impacts continued, to a lesser extent, for some locations for an additional 90 minutes.

During the outage, ThousandEyes observed that many Microsoft BGP prefixes were withdrawn completely but then almost immediately re-advertised. The nature of this event indicates an administrative change, possibly involving some automation system. The changes had a cascading impact on global routing tables, causing significant churn, and leaving users unable to access these services across many different locations and ISP’s.

Join this webinar to see what ThousandEyes observed during this major outage and walk away with practical lessons that your team can implement. We will cover:

  • A basic technical overview of the components of the outage
  • ThousandEyes’ outage analysis, including data from global vantage points before, throughout, and after the event
  • Recommendations for all enterprises providing apps and digital services to consumers and businesses alike
