From the minds that brought you “The Internet Report,” the State of the Internet is a virtual summit that unites experts and leaders in Internet and application delivery as they dive into topics related to the health and future of the Internet. This inaugural summit, happening on July 16, will focus on Internet, cloud networks, and application delivery performance with a special focus on the impact of COVID-19.
What makes this event all the more unique is that our presenters come from a wide variety of organizations and backgrounds, each bringing their own perspectives and expertise to the conversation. We thought it best to take this time to “meet” our panelists. Without further ado, here are the eight experts you won’t want to miss at the State of the Internet.

Meet the Experts
David Belson, The Internet Society
David Belson is the Senior Director of Internet Research and Analysis at the Internet Society focused on efforts around Internet measurement, Internet shutdowns, and understanding market trends that impact the growth of the Internet across the globe. During his career, David has held roles at Oracle, where he drove thought leadership efforts, and Akamai Technologies, where he spent 18 years—most recently as Sr. Director of Industry and Data Intelligence. David publishes a popular blog called the “Internet Disruption Report,” covering global Internet disruptions and their causes. Jana Iyengar, Fastly
Jana Iyengar is a Distinguished Engineer at Fastly, working on networking performance, including building, deploying, and measuring QUIC, TCP and congestion control. He also chairs the IRTF's Internet Congestion Control Research Group and engages in IETF standards development. Prior to Fastly, Jana was a Software Engineer at Google, where he worked on QUIC, BBR as well as other networking projects. Jim Troutman, NNENIX
James Troutman is an accomplished infrastructure consultant and has held senior management and engineering leadership positions with a number of ISPs, rural telcos, enterprise businesses and K12 institutions. He is also a volunteer Director of the Northern New England Neutral Internet Exchange (NNENIX), which is a small not-for-profit IXP in Maine, and he is the co-founder of the annual New England Peering Forum. Jim brings his vast experience and perspective to the panel discussion “Internet Resiliency During COVID-19” at 10 AM.
Scott Rasmussen, NYC Mesh
Scott Rasmussen focuses on telecommunications policy and strategy at the intersection of equity and access. He is currently a founding Board Member and organizer for NYC Mesh, an open, neutral and resilient community network aiming to make a home or business Internet connection accessible and affordable to all New Yorkers. Scott arrived at NYC Mesh with five years of experience developing telecommunications policy and legislation on Capitol Hill. Hear his thoughts on how networks will remain resilient in this "new normal" during the panel discussion “Internet Resiliency During COVID-19” at 10 AM.
William Wohnoutka, CenturyLink
Bill Wohnoutka is the Vice President of Global Internet & Content Delivery Services at CenturyLink. In this role, he leads the team responsible for CenturyLink’s Internet Access, Content Delivery Network, and Vyvx Broadcast Transport services, a product line that generates nearly $2B in annual revenue. Over the past 20 years, Bill has held various leadership roles in CenturyLink’s sales and marketing organizations. Catch his session, “Rescuing Game Delivery Under Internet Duress,” at 10:30 AM to hear how his team worked closely with partners and game producers to rapidly optimize game delivery over constrained networks.
Marcel Flores, Verizon Digital Media Services
Marcel Flores is an accomplished research scientist at Verizon Digital Media Services, where he focuses on transport layer optimizations, large-scale traffic management strategies, and cache optimizations. In his session at 11 AM, “Taming Anycast in the Wild,” he’ll discuss some of the challenges of running a large, multi-provider anycast CDN and how he and his team deal with them. He'll also present some examples of how anycast has grown increasingly complex in the face of COVID-19 lockdowns and provide a view into how these scenarios are managed.
Roger Barranco, Akamai
Roger Barranco is the Vice President of Global Security Operations at Akamai Technologies and is responsible for Akamai's managed security operations. At 11:35 AM, Roger will present “Tales from the Security and NetOps Trenches,” sharing his recent experiences with servicing Tier 1 customers, focusing on upstream Internet challenges and cyber-attack trends.
Geoff Huston, APNIC
Geoff Huston is the Chief Scientist at the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC), where he undertakes research on topics associated with Internet infrastructure, IP technologies, and address distribution policies. Widely regarded as the preeminent researcher on IPv4 exhaustion, he is routinely referenced by international agencies and frequently quoted by the ICT media. At 12:10 PM, Geoff will present “Darwin Reinvented: On the Evolution of Protocols,” which will focus on BBR and explain why it is such an important protocol for the Internet at this time.
Internet Performance Research Reveal
In addition to hearing from this lineup of Internet leaders, you’ll hear from ThousandEyes Internet researchers as they reveal the results of a first-of-its-kind, metric-based study of Internet performance and resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 Internet Performance Report: COVID-19 Impact Edition examines the health of telecom, public cloud, CDN, and DNS provider networks between January and June of 2020. With this report, we aim to illuminate the shadowy, dark spots of the Internet to help IT leaders and practitioners understand how Internet performance and connectivity impact nearly every facet of their businesses.
